Saddle Height Calculator for TT Bike

This calculator is designed for the more aggressive and forward-leaning posture of a Time Trial (TT) or Triathlon (Tri) bike

Time Trial / Triathlon Fit

Pedal System Effective Stack Adjustment
Speedplay (Low Stack) Saddle must be **Lowered** (-3 mm)
Standard Road (Look, SPD-SL) No Change (0 mm)
Thick Sole / Flat Pedal Shoe Saddle must be **Raised** (+5 mm)

*Adjustment accounts for the distance between the pedal spindle and the bottom of your foot.

Optimized TT Saddle Height: 0 cm

*Calculated using the TT factor (Inseam x 0.880).

Saddle Height Calculator with Crank Length

This calculator combines the standard Greg LeMond formula with a crucial adjustment factor for your chosen crank arm length.

Saddle Height with Crank Correction

Crank Length Saddle Height Adjustment
**Shorter** than 172 point 5 mm Saddle is **Raised**
172 point 5 mm **No Change** (Baseline)
**Longer** than 172 point 5 mm Saddle is **Lowered**

*Adjustment ensures the correct knee angle at the bottom of the pedal stroke.

Corrected Saddle Height: 0 cm

*Height is measured BB center to saddle top.

The Greg LeMond Seat Height Formula Explained

The core idea of the LeMond formula is to use your inseam length-the biological measurement of your leg length-to calculate the ideal distance from your pedal axle to your hip at the bottom of the pedal stroke.

The Formula in Simple Terms

The method states that your correct saddle height should be calculated by taking your accurate inseam measurement and multiplying it by the factor zero point eight eight three.

Saddle Height = Inseam Measurement multiplied by 0.883

Step-by-Step Breakdown

  1. Accurate Inseam Measurement:
    • This is the most critical part. You need to measure your cycling inseam, not your pant inseam.
    • Stand barefoot against a wall. Take a large book or level and press it firmly up between your legs to simulate the pressure of the saddle.
    • Measure the distance from the top of the book to the floor, usually recorded in centimeters.
  2. The Factor (0.883):
    • The factor 0.883 represents the percentage of your inseam that should be the distance from the bottom bracket center to the top of your saddle.
    • Why this specific number? When a cyclist's knee is at the bottom of the pedal stroke (known as bottom dead center), the leg should have a slight bend-an angle of about 25 to 35 degrees. This specific multiplication factor accounts for the thickness of your foot, your shoe sole, and the pedal spindle height, ensuring you achieve that optimal, slightly bent knee angle for efficiency and safety.
  3. The Result (Saddle Height):
    • The final number you calculate is the distance measured from the center of the bottom bracket spindle (where the crank arms attach) up to the top center of the saddle (measured along the seat tube).
Important Note

The LeMond formula provides an excellent starting point. It is common for cyclists to slightly adjust the final height by a few millimeters up or down based on their riding style, flexibility, and comfort preference, especially after spending some time riding the bike.

How to Use the Chart
  1. Measure Your Inseam: Get an accurate measurement of your cycling inseam in centimeters.
  2. Locate Your Value: Find your measured inseam in the first column of the chart.
  3. Read the Result: Use the Millimeters column for the most precise number, as bike components are usually adjusted using millimeters.

If your specific inseam is not listed, you can simply perform the required multiplication yourself using your calculator: Inseam in centimeters multiplied by 0 point 883.
