Crank arm length calculator For Road, MTB and BMX bikes
Our calculator finds the optimal crank length for mountain bikes (MTB), BMX, and Road bikes:
đ˛ Crank Length Calculator
Since crank arm length calculation is primarily based on Inseam (Leg Length), the core chart will map inseam ranges to standard crank sizes. The subsequent charts detail the specific adjustments (modifiers) used in the calculator logic.
All crank lengths are in millimeters (mm).
Chart 1: Core Crank Length Recommendation (Based on Inseam)
This chart represents the “Step Function” logic (Method C) and provides the base crank arm length before applying style or discipline adjustments. Inseam should be measured in centimeters (cm) from crotch to floor.
| Cyclist Inseam (cm) | Inseam (Approx. Inches) | Suggested Base Crank Length (mm) |
| < 72 cm | < 28.3 in | 160.0 mm |
| 72 â 76 cm | 28.3 â 29.9 in | 165.0 mm |
| 77 â 81 cm | 30.3 â 31.9 in | 170.0 mm |
| 82 â 86 cm | 32.3 â 33.9 in | 172.5 mm |
| 87 â 91 cm | 34.3 â 35.8 in | 175.0 mm |
| 92 â 96 cm | 36.2 â 37.8 in | 177.5 mm |
| > 96 cm | > 37.8 in | 180.0 mm |
Chart 2: Cycling Discipline Modifiers
These adjustments are applied to the Base Crank Length (Chart 1) to account for clearance, aerodynamics, and intended power application.
| Discipline | Reason for Adjustment | Modifier (mm) |
| Road / Gravel | General Riding, Balanced Leverage | + 0 mm (No change to base) |
| MTB / Enduro | Increased ground clearance needed for technical terrain. | – 2.5 mm |
| Triathlon / TT | Opens the hip angle in the aggressive aero position for better breathing and sustained power. | – 5.0 mm |
| Track | Facilitates extremely high cadence (RPM) for sprinting. | – 2.5 mm |
Chart 3: Riding Style Modifiers
This accounts for the user’s preferred cadence and torque application. These are soft adjustments that fine-tune the recommendation.
| Riding Style | Goal of Adjustment | Modifier (mm) |
| Neutral / Unsure | Standard balance | + 0 mm (No change) |
| Spinner (High RPM) | Favors a tighter, quicker pedal circle for high cadence. | – 2.5 mm |
| Grinder (High Torque) | Slightly favors leverage, though biomechanics suggest this risk is high for injury. | + 1.5 mm |
Calculation Summary Example
To illustrate how the calculator works, imagine a user with an 83 cm Inseam choosing a Triathlon bike and a Spinner style:
- Base Length (Chart 1): 83 cm falls into the 172.5 mm range.
- Discipline Modifier (Chart 2): Triathlon applies a -5.0 mm adjustment.
- Style Modifier (Chart 3): Spinner applies a -2.5 mm adjustment.
Final Calculated Length = 172.5 mm – 5.0 mm – 2.5 mm = 165.0 mm
