Yeah, for short to medium commutes they’re great – simple, low-maintenance, and fun. No gears to mess up, less chance of mechanical problems, and they handle traffic well. But if your commute has big hills or is more than 10–15 km one way, a geared bike might be more comfortable day-to-day.
