Stack and Reach Explained

The universal language of bicycle geometry. Forget “Small, Medium, and Large”โ€”learn how these two coordinates define your perfect fit and ride quality.

The Modern Standard of Fit

In the past, cyclists relied on “Top Tube Length” to determine if a bike fit. However, as frame designs evolved with sloping top tubes and varying seat angles, that measurement became unreliable. Enter Stack and Reach: the only two measurements that describe the precise location of the head tube relative to the pedals (Bottom Bracket).

What is Stack? (The Y-Axis)

Stack is the vertical distance from the center of the Bottom Bracket to the center of the top of the head tube. It dictates how “tall” the bike feels and how high your handlebars can go.

What is Reach? (The X-Axis)

Reach is the horizontal distance from the center of the Bottom Bracket to the center of the head tube. It dictates how “long” the bike feels and how far you have to stretch to reach the bars.

Why These Numbers Are Non-Negotiable

Whether you are a crit racer or a weekend gravel enthusiast, understanding these metrics solves three major problems for every cyclist:

  • Brand Neutrality: A “56cm” Trek and a “56cm” Specialized fit differently. Comparing their Stack and Reach allows you to see the real difference in their physical footprint.
  • Handling Dynamics: Reach determines weight distribution. Too much reach puts too much weight on the front wheel (twitchy); too little makes the front end light and wandering.
  • Aerodynamic Potential: A lower Stack allows for a lower torso position. If you want to go fast, you need a frame with a Stack low enough to get you out of the wind.

The “Golden Ratio” for Your Riding Style

To quickly identify a bike’s category, divide the Stack by the Reach. This Stack-to-Reach Ratio is the fastest way to profile any bicycle on the market:

Ratio Range Category Rider Feel
Under 1.45 Aggressive / Race Low, fast, and aerodynamic. Professional-level flexibility required.
1.45 – 1.55 Performance / All-Rounder The sweet spot for most club riders and amateur racers.
Over 1.55 Endurance / Comfort Upright, relaxed, and sustainable for 6+ hour rides.

Frame vs. Effective Fit

Remember: the numbers on the geometry chart are for the frame only. Your actual hand position (Effective Stack and Reach) changes the moment you add a stem and spacers. Adding 20mm of spacers increases your stack but actually decreases your reach because the fork steerer is angled toward you.

Always buy a frame where the Reach is correct. You can easily adjust Stack with spacers, but “fixing” a wrong Reach with a very short or long stem will ruin the bike’s intended handling characteristics.
